Today the sun set at 5:29 pm and the moon is nearly full; driving home from Cheyenne Bottoms was a spectacle. Stopped to watch thousands of Sandhill Cranes parachuting into a harvested sorghum field. A heavy, wet snow covered Kansas. The doors on my car were frozen shut and I cleared ice off the windshield with a plastic card, since I couldn’t locate my scraper.

A parched flock of birds gathered at the edge of the Mitigation Marsh outside the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. I observed at least 12 species in under 5 minutes and all within a 10-15 yard stretch of the bank.
