I nearly stepped on this White-tailed Deer fawn while trudging through a thicket of sandhill plum and sumac. It was still as the morning while I took its photo. I also caught a glimpse of a Yellow-breasted Chat, a species which has eluded me for many years.
Today the sun set at 5:29 pm and the moon is nearly full; driving home from Cheyenne Bottoms was a spectacle. Stopped to watch thousands of Sandhill Cranes parachuting into a harvested sorghum field. 30 years ago, the Black-footed Ferret was rediscovered by a Wyoming ranch dog, Shep, who brought home a dead ferret. I observed a very active critter climbing the stalks of sunflowers – the Hispid Cotton Rat. It proceeded to chew through the stems until they toppled to the ground; the cotton rat was then able to reach the seed heads.
